30 years later and, honestly, this film hasn't aged a day! Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the epitome of "special" effects. Truly a marvel of modern cinema as all of the spectacular live action/animation techniques were accomplished optically sans computer enhancement. Effects are nothing without an intriguing story and endearing characters. Roger Rabbit is one of those rare efforts where everything coalesced into a perfect storm of stunning cinema!
The late Bob Hoskins plays boozy, down on his luck detective Eddie Valiant. Valiant takes a wandering wife job to take pictures of cartoon star Roger Rabbit's sultry wife Jessica. When novelty jokester Marvin Acme turns up dead, Roger is the prime suspect. The fugitive Rabbit turns to Valiant to clear his name, but they open a Pandora's Box of corruption that could mean the end of the toons' homeland of Toontown.
Director Robert Zemeckis, handles everything with prodigious skill. The story never, ever takes backseat to the dazzling spectacle up on screen. Actors Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd (marvelous as heavy Judge Doom) and Joanna Cassidy all give natural performances unaffected by the insanity surrounding them.
Alan Silvestri delivers what could be, arguably, his absolute masterpiece in a career filled with numerous highlights. Using the frantic works of animated music pioneer Carl Stalling as a springboard, his multifaceted composition miraculously balances a plethora of musical styles into one gargantuan work of staggering complexity and cohesiveness. I particularly love the jazzy, noirish heart Silvestri provides for Valiant. It's nostalgic, sweet and heartbreaking. This is filmmusic at its finest!
